I've been ill this last week and starved off creativity, I had a splurge of doodling this morning. These are my latest illos, done only this morning, so very hot off the presses. My homage to the very worthy Movember campaign. And I have been waiting to draw owls for ages.

I've been terrible at updating my blog over the summer, partly because I've spent quite a bit of time at a few festivals shooting for the festival annual. Over the summer months I've been to Beat-Herder, Camp Bestival, Wilderness, Shambala and Moseley Folk.

APRIL 11: GIRLS WHO DRAW EXHIB AT SOLIHULL GALLERY

The collective I'm part of Girls Who Draw, invite you to their Magic Show at Solihull Gallery running from 4th April until the 11th June. The exhibitors – myself, Mina Braun, Chloe Cook, Helen Entwisle, Ruth Green, Kate Hindley, Mary Kilvert, Sarah Lippett, Beth Morrison, Sarah Ray, Karoline Rerrie and Daisy Whitehouse

We collaborate to produce a limited edition postcard book once a year, based on a theme and accompanied by an exhibition; this year’s theme is magic, and the Magic Show its exhibition. Each illustrator has explored the theme, interpreting it in their unique style and creating new work especially for the gallery. We’ve stitched, paper cut, painted and printed unusual artworks to adorn the whole space, ranging from small artists’ books and hand-sewn characters to large-scale installations.

Magic Show will be at Solihull Gallery from 4th April to 11th June, and throughout its run there will be opportunities to meet and even work with some of the illustrators involved.

Illustrators’ Afternoon Tea, G1 Gallery, 14th April, 3.30-8pm, free – Mary Kilvert and Sarah Ray will lead informal open portfolio reviews, giving those attending the chance to share their work with the group and gain feedback and encouragement. Illustration and Print Fair with ‘Live Drawing’, Solihull Central Library and Arts Complex, 4th June, 10am-5pm – A chance to buy limited-edition prints, artists’ books, handmade cards and other unique artwork; the exhibitors will also be running ‘live drawing’ activities throughout the day – everyone is invited to participate in some large-scale drawing.

So I'm officially crap at updating my blog. Its not like I haven't been doing anything since November (my last post). I've been working on big commissions, portrait commissions, teaching visual communication at BCU and making work for a new Girls Who Draw group exhibition at Solihull Gallery.

Here's a portrait that I did for a very lovely couple Kelly & George's 21st Birthday. Commissioned by Georges mum, it was such a nice portrait to work on because they have a real special love story. I hope I did them justice. This was one of the drafts designs.

So it's finally hot off the presses fols, our third 'Girls Who Draw' postcard book MAGIC and I'm very excited. It features the work of eleven Illustrators including a few of our regulars Karoline Rerrie, Gemma Correll, Anke Weckmann, Sarah Ray, Currentstate (Ce Moi!), Yee King Tuit, Kate Hindley, Ruth Green, Mary Kilvert and two new contributors Alys Paterson and Beth Morrison. The book contains 22 gorgeous postcards and the covers were designed by the uber talented Kate Hindley.

An exhibition of the same name will take place at Solihull Gallery in 2011 and on to other venues later in the year. Keep an eye the blog and our tweets for more details. The book is available through my online shop www.currentstate.bigcartel.com. Buy it, its Fab!

SEPT 10: IMAGES 34 EXHIBITION, LONDON

I got in to the AOI's annual publication IMAGES 34 this year. My work was selected for the exhibition which took place at The London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle on 7th Sept.

The exhibition is a selection of the best illustration commissioned in the UK with some 200 works in categories such as children's books, advertising and editorial. Pretty good to be shown along the like of Andy Potts. Here's my page in the book below.

Ok, this is my first post in ages. I've been pretty pants and updating my blog of late. And thats because I've been working on a big art commission for Wolverhampton Art Gallery. I'm working on four large paintings of a local community based around Phoenix park in Wolves. Its been a bit of a baptism if fire as it's my first oil paintings. Anyway its under wraps until its completion at the end of Oct. I'll pop up some images when its installed.

Over the summer thought I had great fun doing some photography for the festival annual. I covered Latitude and Shambala. I had a wicked time and the annual is Oct 2010. View my images on www.festivalannual.com.

Here's the latest car illustration I've completed yesterday for Influx magazine. It's a Jaguar XKSS as famously driven by the uber cool legend Steve McQueen. Its a beautiful car. I hope I've done it justice. Some subtle references in there for the man itself!

It's been ages since my last blog. Tons of stuff happening in the first two month of 2010. An interesting commission from Influx Magazine to draw the gorgeous Vincent Black Shadow motorbike, as rode by Hunter S Thompson.

Over Christmas & new year I got busy in my Custard Factory studio doing some pencil on canvas work. In fact this year I have vowed to do less computer based illustration and get back to fine art and the hand-drawn work. Which is just as well, because I've just found out I've been successful in my proposal for large art commission. I'm absolutely ecstatic and can't wait to get started on creating oil paintings that reflect the local characters of a community in Wolverhampton. I also have a two man show coming up at a gallery in Hereford in the summer. Will keep you posted on those......

NOV 09: INFLUX MAGAZINE NEW ILLUSTRATION

I have just completed another illustration for Influx magazine. This is the first draft and the brief this time around, was to not only do my usual colourful vector work on the car but also somehow give a sense that this car is a product of 2009/the naughties. I'm pretty happy with it.

I've just found out my work has been selected for Images 34: The Best of British Contemporary Illustration! I have had one of my portraits illustrations selected by a rather prestigious jury for the Self Initiated category, so I am very please! Images 34 kicks off with the exhibition launch in London in July 2010 and then the book is sent out to art directors and designers from early August.

Hoping to push my own work more in the direction of fashion illustration & get some work published in this style. It a mix of photoshop & illustration/vector work. Oh and I love origami birds.

Our Menagerie book is finally here. The book features artwork from 10 different illustrators. This book is full of amazing, beautiful postcards.

Last week I took part in a little project called Marvins Magical Mini Mart. It was a bunch of local designer makers & illustrators selling there wares, as part of the Pop Up Style shop in Birmingham city centre for three days at the end of Sept. Some lovely work by Mr Ben Javens, Sara Fowles (Needles & Hooks) Ruth Green, Joe Rogers, and the Love to Print girls.

We're all hoping to repeat the shop nearer to Christmas, so i will keep you posted!

AUG 09: MENAGERIE - GIRLS WHO DRAW

I've been working on a few new illustrations on the theme of Menagerie for the new postcard book by 'Girls Who Draw' collective. I will keep you posted for when the book arrives on the shelves.

The first illustration is about Hannah Twynnoy, the first lady to be killed by a tiger from a traveling roadshow in the 1700's. The artwork gave me the chance to mess around with some more hand drawn type, which i've been dying to do. I worked for so long hand scratching this type in a miniscule stroke weight that I'm now suffering with Carpal tunnel syndrome (check out the detail), ouch :(( and now having to take a rest from illustrating for a little while if i can. The second illustration, Sloth - what more can i say but they are ace and i want to draw many more!

I'm a member of a female illustrators collective called Girls Who Draw. Its a new group, who have got together to showcase their work through exhibitions, fairs & to make nice pretty things. We've been planning a postcard book over the summer and its currently being printed. All good stuff, some really good illustrations the likes of Gemma Correll, Mmm Biscuits, & Sarah Ray. Well Its been a long time since i've updated my site. I've been steadily working away on various commissions and personal projects over the summer. I've also been trying to set up a new commercial graphics company called Anderson Design Group, so my currentstate stuff could be purely based around illustration & more experimental design. Alex Bermingham a 2nd year vis comm student came to work for me over the summer, so a big thanks to him. Here's some illustrations i did of loudmouth twat Gordon Ramsey and Orlando Bloom.

MARCH 08: THE POST - ART REVIEW

I was photographed by The Birmingham Post a week ago, and the article appeared in this week's Post on Monday & Tuesday. The article has coincided with the launch of Visual with an exhibition at Baskerville House this thursday. Here's a snippet of the article.
The Visual programme has also secured a number of commissions including more recently, a major one completed by Jane Anderson for Crosby Land Lease’s development in the City Centre, which involved a five-day trip to New York. The Birmingham-based artist has produced three large canvas prints that start off with the Bull Ring and St Martin’s Cathedral, then combine the street scenes of Birmingham and the Big Apple, before making way for the final picture of a yellow taxi and the Iron Building in downtown Manhattan.

FEB 08: CROSBY INSTALL

Well I've been away on holiday for two months and my artwork for Crosby is still wasn't installed. Luckily i was back in time to see it go up. With a install team from SP Group - who were fab (cant recommend them enough if anyone is doing any really large format printing). The final canvas's covered 7x3 metres - massive! It was a fairly complicated install, even warranted a health & safety officer to oversee its going up over the stairs on a wall 9 metres off the ground. Go check it out if you get the chance. Its at i-land Crosby Lend Lease just behind the Birmingham Hippodrome on Bromsgrove Street. Very pleased with it now its up.

DEC 07 - CAPE TOWN

In December & January I was lucky enough to take a two month break to go and do some traveling & a bit of photography. My journey started in Cape Town - South Africa, then to Australia, New Zealand and finally Thailand - Koh Phenang. Cape Town was an interesting place. Apartheid clearly still exists, and we did a tour of some of the townships of Lagan, Khayelitsha and Gugulethu. Here's a few of my pics. There's more on my facebook profile.

NOV 07: NEW YORK & CROSBY COMMISSION

November was been a fantastic month for Currentstate as I was shortlisted, and then finally selected to provide a signature artwork for the main entrance to i-land, a new Crosby development in the city centre. The brief was to encompasses essential themes of vibrancy, play, city style, peace, comfort, lifestyle and inspiration. My proposal was to create a bright and bold panoramic montage that spans from Birmingham scenery to New York City, depicting lifestyle, people, bars, cafes, shops, NYC cabs, and street signs.
The proposal also included a brief trip to New York so I could work from my own stock photography, and capture movement and fluidity of real city life. This is the final artwork above, its a massive 7x3 metres and its due to be installed in Dec. I'll try and upload some of the other photo's I took in New York.

In Nov 2007 I made a dash over to New york to take photo's of the flat Iron Building in downtown Manhattan for a commission i had just been selected for. It was the first time i'd been over to New York and went along there with my photographer friend Muriel Bonnet. Here's just a couple of the photo's i took whilst there.

Plus Design Expo

In October I'll be showcasing new work at this years Plus Design Festival. Pretty excited, its looks as if its going to be good one. Some great names from the world of design Jasper Goodhall, Si Scott, Zip Design, Andy Potts and all the usual Brummie suspects. SUNDAY FLEA = NO LIE IN

The last six weeks I've been getting up at 8am to do the Sunday FLEA at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Its an unique weekly street market that consists of an eclectic mix of artists, craftspeople, vintage clothing, children's activities, entertainers, films and food’. On rainy days you can find us in the Rojac building just under the arches of the Custard Factory.

I'll be there every sunday *except 14th Oct, selling limited edition fine art digital prints from £5-200 including some new designs. Pop along if you can or spread the word. The Flea is running every Sunday until Christmas.

SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS

I've been making digital art for only a couple of years now. I decided to start up currentstate as an avenue to do my own work and a reason to mess around on the computer, and get to know programmes like illustrator & photoshop. I'd always been drawing, infact i think i was born with a pencil in my hand, so naturally found myself doing a degree in Fine Art in 95.

For the last four years I've been lucky enough to work in a creative role, as graphic designer in NHS, albeit a little bit frustrating when all you can think about is doing your own stuff, but still a good learning ground.

In 2006 I did the Creative Alliance's After Hours course and decided that was a good plateau to start illustrating and doing some graphics that i finally wanted to do. I worked hard to put togther an exhibition called Love luck & Lollipops. In the month running up to the exhib I was really productive, I did book and produced a ton of new illustrations and artwork.
So now i'm mainly freelancing. The only thing is I've got so busy dong other people's work that I rarely get a chance to do the stuff I love and enjoy again, swings and roundabouts!
So most of these are about a year old.
